A spot buy takes place when a buyer purchases a required item, or items, from a non-contracted, non-strategic supplier. It occurs when buyers go out on the spot and pay market value instead of going through the normal supply chain, where they might have contracts or discounts set up. Making a spot buy usually is more expensive, but it is done to fill an immediate need.
